Storm Ciara and the Effects of Climate Change

Have you see the news lately? Storm Ciara is only one of the massive effects of climate change we observe on a daily basis. Climate change is slowly but surely leading to an increase in the number of storms. And also warmer ocean temperatures and higher sea levels.

Expect to see an increase in the frequency of storms such as Ciara in the near future. In some regions including the North Atlantic, hurricane intensity has increased over the past two to three decades.

This is due to warmer sea surface temperatures intensifying wind speeds. This also means more precipitation and a more destructive impact. Higher sea levels causes more coastal storms such as Hurricane Sandy.

There is definitely a link between climate change and hurricane frequency. Records show large year-to-year changes in the number and intensity of storms. This increase in frequency is due to global warming.

The strongest hurricanes have increased in intensity in the North Atlantic and Indian Oceans. This past week, we met the Storm Ciara in Berlin. Ciara also known as “Sabine” is a tempest that did massive damage to habitations. Storm Ciara is a symptom of the current climate emergency.

We are going to face more and more extreme rainfall events like Storm Ciara in the future. Causing disruption to the known world. Sadly this is going to be a more regular occurrence.

If we do not slow down on our emissions of Greenhouse gasses, things are not going to cool down any time soon. It is now necessary for all of us to combat global heating. Events like Storm Ciara will not just be isolated anomalies if we keep going like this.

Ciara, one of the biggest storm of this century, has caused massive damage to buildings, and other infrastructure as well as flooding across Europe. Rail and air networks just had to stop. Services were cancelled in vast majority.

The impact of global warming is humongous. The result of climate change is heavy rain and flooding. With this warmer atmosphere, more events like Storm Ciara are bound to occur and induce more damage.

Let's act now. Together, we have to stop global temperatures from rising by more than 1.5 degrees. Unfortunately, with our current emissions trends, it is a goal very difficult to achieve.

So let's do better. All of us, we can prepare for wilder weather but also change our behaviors today. From the “super storm” Ciara to the devastating wildfires in Australia, it is undeniable that global climate change has terrible effects
