Some Considerations

In Pompeii, the climate is warm and temperate. Winters are usually rainy, especially in December. The month with the highest relative humidity is May, and the lowest is September. For this reason, the best time from a meteorological point of view to visit Pompeii would be the months of September and October.

Pompeii is not a religious place, so it has no dress code. The complete tour is 7 hours and consists of a lot of walking. Wear light clothes, comfortable shoes and, in summer, bring a hat, water, and sunscreen. In August, temperatures can exceed 35 degrees Celsius, so wear linen or thin muslin clothes.

If you have planned the visit in autumn or winter, don't forget a waterproof jacket and an umbrella in case of rain, since the visit to the excavations is almost entirely outdoors.

If you are visiting Pompeii with small kids, keep in mind that visiting the site with a stroller is not recommended. Better to opt for a baby carrier.

What To Avoid

Avoid wearing formal, elegant, fine clothes, heeled shoes, or wedge sandals. In summer, avoid tight clothes and synthetic fibers. Avoid heavy bags and handbags.

Keep in mind that while visiting historical sites, you'll likely encounter other visitors, some of whom may have different cultural backgrounds and sensibilities. Choosing modest and respectful outfits can help create a positive atmosphere for everyone.

The Simpler The Better

Hot Summers in Shorts

Probably the best and most comfortable outfit to wear while visiting Pompeii during summer is shorts with a basic top. Shorts promote better air circulation around your lower body, which can help regulate your body temperature and prevent sweating. Plus, they provide a higher range of motion and comfort compared to skirts.

Go for tailored pleated shorts from linen or lightweight cotton and pair them with a basic tee. Complete the outfit with espadrilles or sandals.
