A token unlock is the date when locked team, investor, or ecosystem tokens become transferable, and the market treats it as a supply event. Most unlocks coincide with price weakness, but the average hides a wide spread. A 0.3% monthly drip to ecosystem wallets and a 20% cliff to insiders on a thin float are very different trades. This article uses past data and real cases (Arbitrum, Aptos, Ethena, TRUMP) to show which unlocks have mattered, which have not, and what to check before you buy ahead of one.

What the Largest Studies Found
Keyrock, a market maker, analyzed more than 16,000 unlock events. It found that unlocks of all types, sizes, and recipients were almost always negative for price. Roughly 90% showed negative price pressure, and the weakness often started about 30 days before the unlock date. [Keyrock via TechFlow, crypto.news, CryptoSlate]
A smaller 236-event study cited by Streamflow found that 72.5% of events closed lower one month later, with a median return of -16.26% relative to Bitcoin. Streamflow’s summary also notes that the median impact was modest. A minority of large, insider-heavy unlocks on thin-float tokens produced the crashes that make headlines.
Read “90% negative” as direction, not size. A 0.5% dip and a 25% crash both count as negative, so the useful question is which unlocks produce the big moves.

Who Receives the Tokens Matters Most
Recipient type was the strongest predictor in Keyrock’s data. Team unlocks averaged drawdowns of about 25%, while ecosystem development unlocks averaged +1.18%. Teams and early investors hold tokens at a very low cost basis, so almost any price is a profit. Ecosystem wallets usually fund grants and liquidity programs, so recipients tend to spend inside the protocol rather than sell.

Cliff vs Linear
A cliff releases a large batch on one date. A linear schedule releases small amounts daily or monthly. Cliffs create a visible, concentrated shock, while linear schedules create steady pressure the market tends to price in. Keyrock also found that even small, steady unlocks add mild downward pressure.
A drip never ends, so it can cap rallies for years. A cliff does end, which gives the market a clear date after which the overhang is gone. [Blockchain Capital] Most team and investor allocations now use a hybrid: a cliff first, then linear vesting.
Real-World Cases
Arbitrum (ARB), March 16, 2024. This was a pure cliff. About 1.1 billion ARB, worth roughly $2.32 billion then, went to the team, advisers, and investors, with 673.5 million to the team and advisers and 438.25 million to investors. [Cointelegraph] Trackers put it at more than three-quarters of the circulating supply at the time.
The price slid before the date. ARB hit $2.22 on March 13, fell to $1.84 on unlock day, and reached $1.64 on March 17, roughly a quarter lower in four days. Lookonchain flagged at least 11 whales sending ARB to exchanges afterward. The cliff was followed by monthly releases, so the overhang continued as a drip. [Cointelegraph, FXStreet]
Aptos (APT). About 24 million APT, worth around $329 million, was due in March 2024. [Cointelegraph] By August 2025, Tokenomist noted APT was trading near all-time lows even while the broader market held up. A steady schedule can still drag on price when demand is weak.
Ethena (ENA) and TRUMP. These are the counterexamples. ENA rose roughly 6% around an August 2025 unlock on strong stablecoin-narrative momentum. TRUMP kept rising through a significant unlock in April 2025, which Tokenomist called a rare case where demand fully offset new supply. [Tokenomist]

What Predicts the Damage
Size relative to float comes first. Sources disagree on the line: one summary puts negligible impact below about 1% of circulating supply, while a Gate analysis cited by Streamflow found no material correlation below 2% and significance only above 5%. [Autheo, Streamflow] Anything under 1% rarely matters, and anything above 5% deserves attention.
Market regime is second. Tokenomist noted in May 2025 that a risk-on market lets unlocks proceed with minimal disruption. Demand is third, and tokens with real holder utility have a buffer, such as token-gated access that rewards holders. A purely speculative token lacks that cushion.
Checklist Before You Trade Around an Unlock
- Size: divide the unlock by circulating supply, not total supply.
- Recipient: team and insider unlocks carry more risk than ecosystem releases.
- Liquidity: compare the unlock value with daily trading volume, since illiquid tokens get hit hardest.
- Wallet behavior: vesting wallets sending tokens to exchanges is an early warning.
- Demand source: check whether buyers exist beyond emissions, and see how real revenue differs from incentive-driven DeFi yield.
Common Mistakes
- Treating every unlock as a sell signal. Small ecosystem releases rarely matter.
- Waiting for the unlock date. The market trades unlocks early, so much of the move may be over.
- Ignoring the full calendar. Tokenomist counted $97.43 billion in total unlocks in 2025, concentrated in a few tokens such as WBT, SUI, CONX, and WLD.

My Take
Do not trade the headline “90% fall” statistic. The setups with the worst history are insider-heavy cliffs above roughly 5% of circulating supply on tokens with thin liquidity and weak demand. Arbitrum in March 2024 fits that pattern, and the data supports avoiding fresh buys into it.
For a long-term holder, the better question is whether the project can absorb its full emission calendar, not one date. I would pass on tokens where insiders hold most of the supply, and no revenue or utility absorbs new tokens. I would worry less about large-cap, liquid tokens, where studies found no significant price effect.
Treat the evidence with care. The 90% figure comes from a market maker’s study, much of the coverage is secondary, and market conditions confound every event. Use the data to set expectations, not to time entries to the day.
Conclusion
Past data says unlocks lean negative for price, with the size of the effect depending on recipient, size relative to float, and unlock shape. Team cliffs on thin floats are the real danger, while ecosystem releases and small drips usually are not.
Before you buy ahead of an unlock, check the percentage of circulating supply, who receives it, and what demand exists to absorb it. Then check the live calendar on Tokenomist or DefiLlama, since schedules change.
FAQs
1. How far ahead of an unlock does the price usually move?
Keyrock’s research found that weakness often begins about 30 days before the event. Arbitrum’s slide in March 2024 started days before the unlock date.
2. What size of unlock actually matters?
Sources put the threshold between roughly 1% and 5% of circulating supply, with little measurable impact below that range. Anything above 5% deserves serious attention.
3. Are cliff unlocks always worse than linear ones?
Cliffs create sharper short-term shocks, while linear schedules create a steady overhang that can drag for years. Neither is automatically better, so judge them by size and recipient.
4. Can a token rise on unlock day?
Yes, ENA and TRUMP both rose around large unlocks in 2025 when demand was strong. These cases are the exception rather than the rule.
5. Where do I check upcoming unlocks?
Tokenomist and DefiLlama both publish unlock calendars with recipient and size data. Always verify the date and the percentage of circulating supply before acting.
