Bitcoin is often sold as a hedge against stock crashes, but its correlation with stocks and gold tends to shift exactly when markets get stressed. This article compares how Bitcoin, gold, and the S&P 500 behaved in four recent stress events, including the October 2025 crypto liquidation and the 2026 gold crash, so you can see what each asset actually did. It also explains why correlation numbers mislead, which asset fits which job, and what to check before counting any of them as a hedge.

Why Correlation Breaks Down When Markets Panic
Correlation runs from -1 to +1 and is always measured over a window. A 30-day reading and a 90-day reading can disagree, and both can be valid, which is why headlines about “decoupling” often reverse within weeks.
Stress changes the math because investors sell what they can sell fast, not what they like least. WisdomTree described gold’s 12% drop in March 2026, its worst month since June 2013, as liquidity-driven deleveraging. Global gold ETPs shed 84 tons (about $12 billion) that month.
The longer record points the same way. A study of five equity downturns found Bitcoin’s correlation with the S&P 500 was -0.583 in the 2019 dip, 0.588 in the COVID crash, and 0.493 in early 2022. Gold averaged -0.134 in those downturns, with March 2020 as the exception.

How Each Asset Behaved in Four Recent Stress Events
|
Episode |
Bitcoin |
Gold |
Stocks |
What it shows |
|
March 2020 (COVID) |
Fell more than 50% on March 12 to below $4,000 |
Sold off with other assets, then set a record $2,067 on Aug 6, 2020 |
S&P 500 fell about 34% in 33 days |
A liquidity panic hits all three. Gold recovered fastest. |
|
October 2025 (tariff shock) |
About $126,000 to just over $104,000 (Oct 7 to 17), with $19B liquidated |
Rallied to about $4,380, then gave it back as yields stabilized |
S&P 500 fell over 2% on Oct 10, then made new highs by month end |
Crypto margin positions amplified the drop. |
|
Q1 2026 (Jan 6 to Mar 31) |
About $92,500 to $67,800, roughly -27% |
About $4,434 to $4,619, roughly +4%, despite a 12% fall in March |
About 6,945 to 6,529, roughly -6% |
Gold ended higher but had a violent month. |
|
June 23, 2026 (AI-stock selloff) |
Declined alongside gold |
Fell 1.93% to $4,109 |
Tech selloff forced cross-asset selling |
Gold gets sold to cover losses elsewhere. |
Q1 2026 changes are my calculations from closing prices published in the Taylor Market Report.
Three patterns stand out. First, Bitcoin has the deepest drawdowns in almost every episode. Second, gold’s protection shows up over quarters, not days. Third, the S&P 500 was not the weakest link in 2026. It was about 14% higher for the year in early October, while Bitcoin sat below where it started.
The October 2025 event deserves a closer look. CoinGlass counted more than $19 billion in liquidations across about 1.6 million traders, with long positions making up the large majority. Decrypt noted that the 2020 COVID crash produced roughly $1.2 billion in liquidations, so this was more than 15 times larger.

What the Correlation Data Says Right Now
In early September 2026, the 90-day Bitcoin and gold correlation reportedly reached 0.86, the highest since mid-2020. Over the same period, Bitcoin’s link to the S&P 500 fell to 0.18.
Then the picture got messier. From August 18 to September 23, Bitcoin rose 36% while SPY gained 0.05% and GLD fell 1.4%. 24/7 Wall St. pointed out that two of the three drivers, Treasury buybacks and short squeezes, tend to reverse quickly.
As of October 28, Bitcoin was near $81,400, roughly 35% below its October 2025 peak.
My read is that the high Bitcoin and gold reading reflects a shared macro driver, not Bitcoin becoming digital gold. Neither asset pays a yield, and the five-year Treasury yield hit 5.03% on September 24, its highest since 2007. WisdomTree also tied March’s gold drop to a jump in real yields and a stronger dollar. When both assets react to the same rate shock, their correlation rises regardless of narrative.
What Each Asset Is Good For Under Stress
Bitcoin
Bitcoin trades around the clock and has rebounded hard before. After the March 2020 crash, it was back near $9,000 by mid-2020. The weakness is crypto-specific forced selling. On October 10, 2025, a collateral pricing failure at Binance led to $283 million in user reimbursements, which shows how fragile margin systems can be in a fast move.
How you hold Bitcoin changes your crash risk. A spot ETF cannot be liquidated by an exchange, but it trades only during US market hours. The trade-offs are covered in this breakdown of Bitcoin ETF vs buying BTC directly.
Gold
Gold has the best long-run record as a stock-market diversifier, but it is not a calm asset. It hit a record near $5,594 in January 2026, then fell as much as 6% intraday on the same day. By July 30, it traded near $4,089, about 27% below the high.
The lesson is time horizon. Gold recovered from the March 2020 trough to a record in under five months. How you own it matters too, and this guide to physical gold, ETFs, mining stocks, or derivatives explains why miners and futures add volatility that physical gold and plain ETFs do not.
Stocks (S&P 500)
Stocks have earnings behind them and recover with the economy, but they fall fast. The 34% drop in 33 days in 2020 is the reference case. In 2026, the risk is concentration, since an AI-sector selloff on June 23 was enough to drag gold and Bitcoin down with it.
How to Check Whether an Asset Is Really Hedging You
Use these checks before relying on any correlation number:
- Window: Compare 30-day, 90-day, and full-downturn readings. If they disagree, the relationship is unstable.
- Downside behavior: Look at what the asset did on the worst days for stocks, not the full-period average.
- Shared driver: Ask whether both assets respond to real yields, the dollar, or liquidity. If so, expect them to fall together.
- Vehicle: Spot, ETF, futures, and tokenized gold such as PAXG or XAUT differ in trading hours, margin rules, and counterparty risk.
- Your forced-selling risk: If you have borrowed against crypto in a lending protocol, a correlation spike can liquidate you before any recovery arrives.
Decision Framework: Which Asset for Which Job
|
Situation |
Better anchor |
Why |
|
You need the money within 12 months |
Cash equivalents |
All three assets fell in at least one episode above. |
|
You want protection against equity drawdowns over quarters |
Gold |
Negative average correlation in downturns, though March 2020 and March 2026 show short-term breaks. |
|
You want upside and can accept a 50% drop |
Bitcoin, sized small |
It fell more than 50% in a day in 2020 and sits about 35% below its peak now. |
|
You borrow against crypto. |
Lower your loan-to-value |
October 2025 liquidations hit long positions hardest. |
|
You want long-term growth tied to earnings |
Broad stock index |
Strongest 2026 performer so far, with real cash flows behind it. |
Common Mistakes
- Reading a 90-day correlation as a promise. The 0.86 reading came right after a five-week divergence.
- Treating gold as a daily hedge. March 2026 showed it can drop 12% in a month.
- Sizing Bitcoin like gold. Their drawdowns are not in the same league.
- Buying after a spike. Gold’s record day in January 2026 reversed sharply within hours.
- Ignoring where Bitcoin is held. Exchange margin and DeFi collateral can force a sale at the worst price.
My Take
Do not count Bitcoin as a stress hedge today. In the episodes above, it behaved like a high-beta liquidity asset, falling hardest when funding tightened. The September 2026 divergence is worth watching, but 24/7 Wall St.’s own test is stricter: sustained ETF inflows, and Bitcoin holding above $80,875 while five-year yields stay near 5%.
Gold is the better stress anchor over a multi-month horizon, as long as you accept sharp air pockets. I would hold physical gold or a plain gold ETF before miners or futures. If your horizon is under a year, cash beats all three.
Bitcoin makes sense as a small satellite position for people who can sit through a 50% loss without borrowing against it. Avoid it as a core hedge if you use margin or DeFi loans. Before buying any of these, check the vehicle, the correlation window, and how much forced-selling risk sits in your own account.
Conclusion
The data shows a consistent pattern. In liquidity-driven stress, correlations jump, Bitcoin falls furthest, gold wobbles but recovers over months, and stocks fall fast then rebound with the economy. The recent Bitcoin and gold link looks more like a shared reaction to rates than a new safe-haven role.
The major risks are forced selling, rising real yields, and trusting a short correlation window. Your practical next step is to size Bitcoin so a 50% drop is survivable, hold gold for quarters-long protection, and remove borrowed positions that a correlation spike could liquidate.
FAQs
1. Does Bitcoin fall when the stock market crashes?
In the 2020, October 2025, and early 2026 episodes covered here, it usually fell, and by more than stocks. The exception was the 2019 dip, so the pattern is common but not guaranteed.
2. Is gold still a safe haven after falling 12% in March 2026?
Gold remains a long-horizon diversifier, but March showed it can be sold hard when investors need cash. It ended Q1 2026 higher even after that drop, so judge it over quarters, not weeks.
3. Why did Bitcoin and gold correlate so closely in September 2026?
Both pay no yield and react to real yields and the dollar. That shared driver can lift their correlation even if Bitcoin is not acting as digital gold.
4. Should Bitcoin be part of a crash-protection plan?
Not as the main piece, based on how it behaved in the episodes above. If you hold it, size it so a 50% drop does not force you to sell, and avoid borrowing against it. This is general information, not personal financial advice.
5. Is tokenized gold like PAXG a safer way to hold gold on-chain?
It tracks the gold price but adds issuer, custody, and smart-contract risk. Check redemption terms and reserve attestations before treating it as equal to physical gold or a regulated ETF.
