Restaking lets you reuse staked ETH to secure extra services, such as oracles and data layers, in exchange for rewards on top of the base staking rate. The same ETH can now be slashed (partly destroyed as a penalty) if an operator breaks an AVS’s rules, and the extra yield looks thin in October 2026: Lido’s own calculator shows about 2.25% base APR, while DefiLlama data cited by CoinDesk shows the whole restaking category earning roughly $100,000 in fees in a week on about $10 billion locked. This article compares EigenLayer, Symbiotic, and liquid restaking tokens (LRTs), puts numbers on how much extra yield you would need, and tells you who should restake and what to check first.

What Restaking Pays Right Now

Lido’s APR calculator showed 2.25% on October 12, 2026, a seven-day average that moves with network conditions. Restaking pays on top of that from AVS fees and token incentives, and the two differ in quality.

On September 8, 2026, the restaking category held $10.02 billion but earned only $99,977 in fees over the prior week. Liquid staking held $51.87 billion and earned $27.35 million in the same week. My back-of-the-envelope math turns that into roughly 0.05% annualized for restaking against about 2.7% for liquid staking.

Fees miss some token incentives, so this understates what restakers may receive, but it shows the fee-paid layer is thin. For a deeper side-by-side, read this restaking versus liquid staking yield comparison.

The market is acting on this. In August 2026, ether. fi removed restaking from weETH,fi removed restaking from weETH, and its documentation shows under 1% of assets still restaked on EigenLayer. Its CEO told CoinDesk there were “no meaningful yield opportunities in restaking.”

How Slashing Works and Where the Exposure Sits

EigenLayer slashing went live on mainnet on April 17, 2025. Each AVS defines its own slashing conditions, and operators opt in to each operator set. Operators allocate “unique stake” to a set, and only that set’s AVS can slash that slice.

This limits damage spreading between AVSs, but not the loss inside one set. EigenLayer’s docs say slashing does not have to be provable on-chain, so AVSs can slash for any reason they design. Slashed funds are burned, or redistributed in some sets, after a 7-day delay, and slashed native ETH stays locked in EigenPod contracts.

Slashing is only one of several risk layers:

  • AVS slashing: A miscalibrated condition can penalize honest operators, and you carry that risk through delegation.
  • Operator concentration: One operator running many AVSs can lose stake in several places at once, up to what it allocated to each set.
  • Token wrapper risk: LRTs add smart-contract, liquidity, and depeg risk unrelated to slashing.
  • Bridge and lending contagion: An LRT used as collateral can pass its failures into lending markets.

The Break-Even Math

Slashing is a lump-sum loss, while restaking yield arrives in small payments. This table shows how many years of extra yield one slash erases.

These figures are illustrative and ignore compounding, gas, and price moves. At a fee-based yield near 0.05%, a 5% slash would take 100 years to repay.

EigenLayer, Symbiotic and LRTs Compared

Option

Size (approximate, dated)

Slashing model

Main weakness

Best for

EigenLayer (EigenCloud)

About $5B to $7B in 2026; $22.06B peak in August 2025

Operator sets, unique stake, optional redistribution

Thin fee revenue; AVS-defined slashing

Holders who delegate directly and read operator-set terms

Symbiotic

About $329M base-layer TVL (July 2026)

Vault-level terms with resolvers that can veto slashing

Smaller and less proven

Advanced users wanting vault-level control

LRTs (weETHs, rsETH, ezETH)

Top five made $953,350 gross profit in Q2 2026

Inherited from the underlying protocol

Wrapper, bridge, and depeg risk on top

Rarely the first choice

EigenLayer’s TVL varies by date and DefiLlama methodology, so check the live page. Ether.fi now runs its restaking on Symbiotic through weETHs.

What Went Wrong in Real Cases

Renzo’s ezETH fell to $688 on Uniswap on April 24, 2024, after an unpopular airdrop announcement. Liquidations topped $60 million, and only $27 million of ETH was paired against it on mainnet, with no withdrawals available at the time.

On April 18, 2026, an attacker drained 116,500 rsETH, about $292 million and roughly 18% of supply, from Kelp’s LayerZero bridge. The route used a 1-of-1 verifier setup, and no code bug was publicly identified. Aave estimated bad debt between $123.7 million and $230.1 million depending on loss allocation, and said Ethereum mainnet rsETH stayed backed.

Neither was an AVS slashing, which shows the wrapper has hurt users more than slashing so far. As of mid-October 2026, I could not find a well-documented large slashing event in primary sources, but that is a short track record.

What to Check Before You Deposit

If you are new to the mechanics, start with this beginner’s guide to restaking Ethereum. Then check:

  • Operator sets joined: Avoid redistributable sets unless the reward clearly compensates for the extra risk.
  • Allocation percentage: It is your loss ceiling per set.
  • Reward token: ETH or stablecoins are easy to value, while AVS tokens and points can fall faster than yield accrues.
  • LRT specifics, if you use one: Check withdrawal options, DEX depth against ETH, and the bridge configuration of any L2 version.
  • Exit path: Slash resolution takes 7 days, so do not restake money you may need quickly.

My Take

For most ETH holders, restaking is not worth the added slashing risk at today’s rewards. Fee-based yield is near 0.05% by my estimate, and one 5% slash would take a century of it to repay. Plain liquid staking at about 2.25% carries far fewer layers of risk.

If you still want exposure, keep it to a small sleeve, under 10% of your ETH as a rule of thumb. Delegate directly rather than through an LRT, choose an operator with few AVS opt-ins, prefer ETH-denominated rewards, and never loop restaked collateral through lending markets. Skip it entirely if you are a new staker or borrow against your position.

I would reconsider if ETH-denominated AVS fees grow visibly on DefiLlama. DefiLlama listed the EIGEN fee switch as off in February 2026, so verify its status.

Conclusion

Restaking’s extra yield is small and often token-denominated, while slashing and wrapper risks are large and lumpy. One modest slash can erase years of reward, and the failures that actually hurt users, ezETH in 2024 and rsETH in 2026, came from the token and bridge layer.

Your next step is to compare your base staking return with any restaking offer, then check the operator’s sets, the reward token, and the exit path. If you cannot explain who can slash you and why, stay with plain staking.

FAQs

1. Can I lose all my ETH by restaking?

An AVS can slash up to the stake an operator allocated to its operator set, so your maximum loss depends on that allocation. Slashed native ETH stays locked in EigenPod contracts instead of being redistributed.

2. Has EigenLayer slashing ever actually happened?

Slashing went live on mainnet on April 17, 2025, and I could not find a well-documented large slashing event in primary sources as of October 2026. That is a short track record, so it is not proof the risk is small.

3. Is a liquid restaking token safer than restaking directly?

Usually not, because you keep the slashing risk and add bridge, depeg, and smart-contract risk. Kelp’s April 2026 exploit drained about 18% of rsETH supply from its bridge.

4. How much of my ETH should I restake?

No verified safe percentage exists, so treat this as a rule of thumb. I would keep it under 10% of your ETH and never borrow against it in a loop.

5. Should I wait for EigenLayer fees to rise before restaking?

Waiting costs little because fee-based rewards are tiny today, and you can enter later if ETH-denominated AVS payments grow on DefiLlama. The EIGEN fee switch was listed as off in February 2026, so check its current status first.
