Base and Arbitrum are the two Ethereum layer-2 chains most DeFi users compare before moving capital, but a headline APY on either one says little about who is actually paying that return. A lending rate backed by borrower demand, a liquidity pool paid in a governance token, and a fixed-rate market carry very different risks, and the chain you pick decides which of them you can reach with good liquidity. This article compares both ecosystems using DeFiLlama data from October 19 to 21, 2026, and shows what to check before you deposit.

Where the Numbers Stand

Base leads on every size metric I checked. Base held $5.15 billion in stablecoins, $977.45 million in 24-hour DEX volume, and $83,054 in 24-hour chain fees on October 21. Arbitrum held $3.522 billion in stablecoins, $140.97 million in DEX volume, and $15,566 in chain fees as of October 19.

Two details matter more than the headline gap. First, Base’s lead is concentrated: Morpho holds $4.513 billion on Base, which is roughly 72% of the chain’s TVL by my calculation. Second, Arbitrum’s Aave V3 market is close in size to Base’s, at $539.1 million versus $558.83 million.

Borrow interest: the durable layer

Lenders earn what borrowers pay, so rates rise and fall with utilization. On Base, curated Morpho vaults dominate. On Arbitrum, Aave V3 is the largest listed lending market.

Morpho vaults add a risk layer because a curator such as Gauntlet or Steakhouse chooses which markets the vault lends into. DeFiLlama’s stablecoin yield table lists vaults such as Gauntlet USDC Prime and Steakhouse High Yield USDC Edition under Morpho Blue.

For a mainnet benchmark, the same table showed Sky’s savings USDS at 3.60%, Aave Ethereum USDT at 3.50%, and Maple’s syrupUSDC at 4.97%. If a stablecoin vault on either L2 pays far above roughly 3.5% to 5%, find the extra risk or reward token that explains the gap.

Trading fees: Aerodrome and GMX

Aerodrome (Base): LPs earn mainly AERO emissions, while veAERO holders receive trading fees. Its TVL fell from $1.25B to $367M. The Aero merger expands across seven chains, including Arbitrum. Check migration requirements and launch status before investing.

GMX (Arbitrum): LPs earn trading fees but risk losses when traders profit. A July 2025 exploit drained about $42M from GMX V1’s GLP pool; V2 was unaffected, and affected GLP holders were later compensated.

Token rewards: the least durable layer

Arbitrum’s DAO has funded targeted incentives. DRIP Season 1 deployed 14.6 million ARB across 12 two-week epochs between September 2025 and February 2026. Rewards were tied to time-weighted borrow balances, were not guaranteed, and did not cover losses.

Reward yield is only as good as the reward token. ARB traded at $0.19 with a $1.333 billion market cap on DeFiLlama’s October 19 snapshot. If ARB halves, the reward part of your APY halves too.

Base has no native token. Base said in September 2025 that it was exploring a network token but had no definitive plans. The latest reporting I found, from February 2026, still describes no token, so do not price a possible airdrop into your yield math.

Aave V3 is the neutral baseline because it exists at similar size on both chains, so you can compare the same market on each. Morpho is the Base specialty, but its size means one curator mistake matters more there.

Pendle needs extra care. Its TVL is cyclical because pools mature and reset. DeFiLlama’s Arbitrum page showed Pendle’s TVL there at $60.6 million after a drop of more than 60% over the latest week and month, which likely reflects maturities rather than an exit (my inference).

Security and Risk Tradeoffs

Both Base and Arbitrum are classified as Stage 1 rollups, with Security Councils that retain upgrade powers. Check L2BEAT for their latest security status.

Most losses come from apps rather than the chains themselves. Moonwell on Base reported $1.78 million in bad debt in February 2026 after a cbETH oracle misconfiguration, while GMX V1 suffered a $42 million exploit in July 2025.

Before depositing, check:

  • Real APY: Compare base yield with token rewards and 30-day average APY.
  • Exit liquidity: Confirm withdrawals are available.
  • Oracle security: Check how collateral prices are determined.
  • Vault risks: Review Morpho curators and supported markets.
  • Reward tokens: Assess their liquidity and price stability.

Which Chain Fits Which User

Your starting size and goal matter more than the chain. If you are splitting a small starter portfolio, the framework for allocating $1,000 safely for yield shows how much belongs in stablecoin lending versus riskier positions.

User type

Better fit

Reason

Beginner earning stablecoin interest

Base, Aave V3 first

Deeper stablecoin float and the simplest risk profile

Yield seeker who can vet curators

Base, Morpho vaults

Largest Morpho presence, but check curator and markets first

Active trader or perps LP

Arbitrum, GMX

Main trading-fee product, with trader-counterparty risk

Fixed-rate seeker

Arbitrum, Pendle

Locks a rate to maturity; watch maturity dates and depegs

Airdrop hunter

Neither as core yield

No confirmed Base token, and ARB rewards fall with ARB price

Common Mistakes

These errors reduce real returns more often than choosing the “wrong” chain:

  • Chasing spot APY on thin pools. Rates on small TVL can spike and revert within days.
  • Valuing rewards at today’s token price. Reward APY changes every time the token moves.
  • Treating TVL as a safety score. Size did not stop Moonwell’s bad debt or the GMX V1 exploit.
  • Rotating between chains for a small rate gap. Bridge costs, gas, and slippage can erase the spread, and in many jurisdictions each swap can create a taxable event, as the crypto portfolio rebalancing tax guide explains.
  • Ignoring migration events. The Aero merger requires manual action for self-custody holders.
  • Depositing in a vault without reading the curator’s market list.

My Take

I’d choose Base for stablecoin and ETH lending because it has deeper liquidity, higher DEX volume, and a strong Aave V3 market. Use Arbitrum for specialized opportunities like GMX and Pendle, but keep positions smaller.

On Base, diversify across Morpho curators and Aave to reduce concentration risk. Avoid chasing token rewards or unusually high yields without understanding the risks. If funds are already on Arbitrum and yields are similar, staying put may be cheaper than bridging.

Conclusion

Base is the better default for stablecoin yield because it has deeper stablecoin liquidity, much higher DEX volume, and the same Aave V3 market that Arbitrum offers. Most of that return comes from borrow interest, the most durable source. Arbitrum remains the place for GMX liquidity and Pendle fixed-yield markets.

The tradeoffs are clear. Base’s TVL lead leans heavily on Morpho, Aerodrome is smaller than at its peak and mid-migration, and ARB rewards are only worth what ARB is worth. The main risks sit at the app level, such as oracle errors on Base and the GMX V1 exploit on Arbitrum, plus Security Council powers on both chains.

Your next step is simple. Pull the 30-day average APY and the base versus reward split for the exact pool on DeFiLlama, check its oracle and curator, then make a small test deposit and withdraw once before sizing up.

FAQs

1. Which chain pays more on stablecoins, Base or Arbitrum?

For the same protocol, the spread between the two chains is usually small and changes with each market’s borrow demand. Compare the 30-day average APY for the exact pool on DeFiLlama instead of the spot rate.

2. Is Base safer than Arbitrum for DeFi?

Both are described as Stage 1 on L2BEAT’s framework, so the chain-level gap is small next to app-level risks like oracle design and vault curation. Base moved to its own stack in February 2026, so verify its current L2BEAT status yourself.

3. Should I bridge from Arbitrum to Base to chase a higher APY?

Only if the gap is large and stable after bridge costs, gas, and any tax event. A one-week rate spike on a thin pool rarely survives that math.

4. Will a Base token change DeFi yields on Base?

Base has said it is exploring a network token but has shared no definitive plans, so no airdrop should be counted as yield. If one launches, incentive-driven rates could change quickly.

5. What should Aerodrome LPs do about the Aero merger?

Aero was scheduled to launch on October 21, 2026, and self-custody holders of AERO, VELO, and veAERO must migrate manually through the upgrade portals. Read the official launch guidance for LPs before adding or moving liquidity, since Coinbase’s own conversion window runs November 2 to 4.
